The White House has issued “guidance” asking mainstream media outlets to “ramp up scrutiny” over the impeachment inquiry against President Joe Biden.
The memo, titled “It’s Time For The Media To Do More To Scrutinize House Republicans,” was sent by Ian Sams, a White House special assistant to the president, senior advisor and spokesman for the White House Counsel’s Office.
“It’s time for the media to ramp up its scrutiny of House Republicans for opening an impeachment inquiry based on lies,” wrote Sams. “When even House Republican members are admitting that there is simply no evidence that Joe Biden did anything wrong, much less impeachable, that should set off alarm bells for news organizations.”
Sams and the White House claim that Congressional Republicans have for years tried to attract media coverage for baseless accusations.
“It is the responsibility of the independent press to treat their claims with the appropriate scrutiny,” wrote Sams. “Covering impeachment as a process story – ‘Republicans say X, but the White House says Y’ – is a disservice to the American public who relies on the independent press to hold those in power accountable.”
“And in the modern media environment, where every day liars and hucksters peddle disinformation and lies everywhere from Facebook to Fox, process stories that fail to unpack the illegitimacy of the claims on which House Republicans are basing all their actions only serve to generate confusion, put false premises in people’s feeds and obscure the truth,” continued Sams.
In his memo, Sams included a separate 14-page document allegedly debunking Republican claims about impeachable offenses allegedly committed by Biden, along with a message urging news outlets to use “factual information” in their reporting.
“That’s crazy,” said Carl Higbie on Newsmax of the attempt by the White House to pressure the media on how to cover the impeachment inquiry. “Go and try to tell every major media company in America that they should be covering something else. Are you high?”
“No, White House. I’ll cover what I think is relevant,” he added. “You Democrats stick to bankrupting the country and hopefully losing the next election.”
“They should be playing hardball and instead what they’re doing is b——g about the media,” said one White House reporter who regularly attends briefings to the New York Post.
“I don’t think the media likes being told what to do. I think it’s going to backfire,” he added. “It seems to say to me that they believe the media will just do what [the White House] tells them. It’s a terrible look for the administration.”
“This is not okay,” said award-winning journalist Matthew Keys. “The White House should not be encouraging, influencing or interfering in the editorial strategies of America’s newsrooms… Now, any time the media does try to hold Republican lawmakers to account, those lawmakers can simply counter by questioning whether it’s actual journalism or something encouraged by the Biden administration.”
The White House’s “guidance” comes following an announcement from Republican House Speaker Kevin McCarthy on Tuesday, Sept. 12, in which he said that he would be directing House committees to open an impeachment inquiry into Biden. McCarthy’s main charges against Biden involve the president’s alleged collusion with his son Hunter Biden’s illicit business dealings in China and Ukraine.
“Through our investigations, we have found that President Biden did lie to the American people about his own knowledge of his family’s foreign business dealings,” said McCarthy, additionally claiming that “these allegations paint a picture of a culture of corruption.”
The current impeachment process against Biden comes over two months after House Republicans initially passed a resolution to impeach the president. (Related: Impeachment resolution against Biden PASSES House vote, now moves to two committees for review.)
“This logical next step will give our committees the full power to gather all the facts and answers for the American public,” said McCarthy. “These are allegations of abuse of power, obstruction and corruption and they warrant further investigation by the House of Representatives.”
